Big Muff Pi: Beginners Guide
This video is about tips and tricks for using the Big Muff Pi guitar pedal made by EHX. This pedal sounds great by itself but can become lost once you put it with other instruments. Let's fix that!

Secrets of Indian Classical Music with Mita Nag
Psonic might have a video on this. Thought one wire was moved no soldering just moved. My personal experience the noise wasn’t too bad. I’d like to upgrade tubes.
i have a left handed bass, can the arms be rotated so it will fit a left-handed instrument?
Yes. The arms are on a pivot and will rotate on their own to fit the shape for the headstock as needed.
I like your hair.
@@SomePeopleDidSomething I like your comment.
36:37
Maybe try an ulticlip on the kydex?
Yes, that is a very popular option. But for me and pocket carry I have zero need for it and it just adds bulk. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment. I appreciate it.
Do you not realize that a 12AT7 is a lower output tube than a 12AX7?
Yes, I should have clarified that in the video. Sorry for missing that key talking point. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.
No matter what I do, what oil I put, the strings get sticky. I also feel the need to add a lot of oil to my finger, otherwise my fingers don’t glide. Do you have any suggestions for me?
What oil are you using?
@@JeffStarr I’ve tried coconut pure, olive, coconut hair oil, and almond
@@JeffStarr perhaps I am using too much oil and softening my calluses?
Please stop talking
But I love the sound of my voice so much.
Some quick research reveals that the volume circuit on this “Black Russian” Big Muff is indeed not linear but logarithmic!! Explains so much.
Yeah, each version of the big muffs has its own tiny quirks. I remember when everyone hated the version with OpAmps and now those are popular.
🤘🤘
The low dark tone on this is why it’s so good with bass, imho… guaranteed you can get some of the darkest bass tones ever with this thing. As a fan of Jungle/Drum n Bass…. Yeah… it’s that level dark. So good.
I can vouch for this model specifically. 1) it looks the coolest of any big muff (imho). 2) something about the knobs and “fast” pots I just like… maybe it’s the contrast between how fat it is and how delicate the movements of the knobs must be… a benefit of these “fast pots” is that during long feedback or notes, you can actually mess with the controls over time like it’s a wah wah or something. This actually lends itself to some really interesting results if you’re running anything else besides a guitar (I used it with a Danelectro Longhorn bass for many years, and a Roland TR-606 drum machine as well) and the knobs on this model actually feel more like a DJ mixer than an FX pedal. But back to the sound. The sound on this is a ONE AND ONLY. Like a good pizza spot.
I been embracing the Muff for for over 25 years, and I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of it. I also perform mostly solo, so maybe adding cymbals (or a whole band) into the mix might change my opinion.
Tried and true! It’s a beautiful monster. Rock on!
Try the new Bad Cat amps
I ended up with a Dr. Z but the Bad Cat amps are really nice too.
@@JeffStarr Z is really nice,enjoy

Good stuff, right?
I carry my Leatherman Wave around, but now I'm feeling like I need a fixed blade knife! I have an old rusty machete that I love to sharpen, and I use that in my yard extensively which is literally a jungle.

Frank and Gail had perfect numerology together; FVZ 12/21/1940 - AGS 01/01/1945
Frank was born on 21 December 1940 I thought. Even if it was the way round you suggest, what would it mean?
@@paulinebutcherbird Thanks, you're right, I fixed it.
@@paulinebutcherbird I used Chaldean Numerology on their full birth certificate names, and they have perfect match numbers, in my opinion, and the fact that she doesn't have an 8 in her entire chart, and 8 is represented by the letters F, and P. it's like a bread crumb to me for me to continue. Frank's name numbers are 999 and Gail's are 696. He is a two-life path, and she is a three-life path. I could say more, but we're busy today. I like to listen to your content while I calculate the numbers. Cheers.
@@sycamoreknox9419 Double Dutch to me!!!
Hi. Today's my second day. It pains really really bad! Does this improve at all? How do people play for hours? Does it pain all the time!!?!?
Yes, it will get less painful as your fingers become stronger and your calluses build up. When your fingers hurt, it is a good time to practice by singing all your sitar exercises. Don’t give up!
@@JeffStarrHey thank you so much. Can you tell me what you mean when you say I can sing my sitar exercises when it pains? Like I can stop and go "Sa re ga ma pa dha ni sa" instead of playing it on the sitar? How would that help in my playing? Again, thanks for the reply
Singing will help in a lot of ways. It allows you to learn the notes and their pitch in your head and ear while your finger recovers you can even move your hand without pressing down on the string to help reinforce the notes in your brain. Then as you begin to learn pultas and other advanced exercises it will be a lot easier as you know each note very very well.
@@JeffStarr That's very helpful. Thanks so much for that.
Zappa was government sherlock as well as music gem a micturate most of the time. Nobody experimented sound like him. I now play some weird bluesy humour he is a big influence. miss what could have ❤
I had this one and also the princeton 68, good tone but a lot of rattle and noise. Now i play digital and all of this problem are gone.
I almost guarantee all these bad demo videos don't realize that all tube amps need new tubes after being shipped through the mail. If you buy a tube amp from a store it is still shipped to them through the mail. Replace the tubes when you get the amp and I bet that noise is gone. Your welcome
I’ve owned and gigged with multiple tube amps over 20 years. I’ve never needed to do this. The amp I replaced this with, a Dr Z., is a tube amp and I didn’t replace those tubes when it arrived. It’s dead quiet. This specific version of the Deluxe Reverb has design and/or quality control flaws. It’s just that simple.
@@JeffStarr Simply setting a tube amp down too hard will mess up the tubes and add noise. Tubes are just really delicate. It's surprising we still use them in the same way frankly. The manufacturers are well aware of this. I have heard that fender quality control has dropped and I don't doubt that. Good luck
Wonderful interview. Thank you
Thankyou, Maria. Kind of you.
Pro Tip: Reviews are significantly better when you can actually hear the pedals.
I know this is an old post but - I have a lot of amps - about a dozen and mostly tube amps and can say without hesitation that my superchamp xd is my favorite for recording and I use the line out every time. No other amp comes close actually. It's the best for me. I should mention I only use the bassman setting - haven't changed that knob in years. Also works fantastic to run the line out to another amp.
Well I’ve tried loads of reverbs and this is my favourite by a long way. Sent back a surfybear metal in favour of this. Going to pick up the topanga burnside with the built in tremolo also.
Yeah, I really like the sound of this pedal. I just wish it was cheaper. Topanga Burnside is a great combo pedal and the way to go. Nice!
6:38 this is a trippy party in the 60's I think. did you break my time machine?
me when someone besides me plays more than one character
I was using vintage Polychorus last days and now I can say this is the best pedal I ever had. Range of possibilities is awesome, beautiful sound.
Thanks for sharing!
sounds more like you have a lamp with a dimmer on the same circuit as the amps. to avoid sounds like this, never light and sound on the same power group. other thing, im in a race for a new amp, but this one is not my new amp. fender should be nice and clean, this one sounds like the first proto types. and that's not a compliment in this case 😁
This was hilarious I’m subscribing right now!
Thanks!
Awesome review, very informative! Been thinking about getting one for a while now. I was relieved when the high pitched voice thing went away in the second half of the video. It was worth a try but you might want to either have a visual of a character doing the voice or just not not do it.
Thanks for watching and sharing constructive feedback.
Ps nice guitars! Thanks for the video, just purchased this knife in MagnaCut.
Awesome! I’d love to hear what you think about it once you’ve had it a while. I would totally purchase it again in mangnacut if I lost my s35vn version.
Postie just delivered the White River Small Game. Great size for EDC and goes well with my three other White River knives. Sharp AF right out of the box! Thanks for the video!
Really nice unboxing and intro to arguably the best Delhi-style harmoniums in the world! I'll be back for more . . .
I am recording a bunch of harmonium content this weekend. Stay tuned for future videos.
Thanks for such a great video and the links. This is one of my favorites ruclips.net/video/ed4SIvGjqNI/видео.html
Good video. Thanks! I just want to add some sitar sound to my pop songs like the Beatles and Stones did, so it’s either a sitar guitar or a VI for me.
Cool, I'm glad this video was helpful!
I can tell a difference in volume but little in the way of tone. These aren't like tube amps with multiple ax7 tubes. I would stick with a stock number tube and maybe get a better-quality US made one (if you have money to burn), but I wouldn't use a different one. I follow the don't mess with things you know nothing about.
This is the exact reason I went with the 68 Princeton. It didn’t have the noise of the 65 and the deluxe reverbs. I think it’s just because it is a lower wattage.
I changed mine to a premium mullard ax7 and the power tubes to premium matched set of mullard. And replaced the speaker with a Warehouse speaker. All made a huge difference.
Hi Jeff, great video! I'm also into knives and have been thinking about a fixed blade pocket carry. The #1 on my wish list is the MKM Pocket Tango. I don't have anything in this category yet. I'll look into the White River. The only Magnacut I have so far is the Leatherman ARC and it has not disappointed yet.
The White River M1 would also be an excellent option.
Another small USA made knife good for pocket carry is the Esee Izula is S35VN. Or the Izula 2 in carbon steel. I personally prefer stainless for pocket carry. The Esee Sencillo in Magnacut looks awesome but it’s currently out of stock everywhere online. The Sencillo is actually manufactured by White River for Esse.
You might want to look at the Lion Steel H1 or H2...
Sounds like a Boeing jet!
Ha!
Both sound good! But I'm really excited to try this (I own a ring thing and a blues driver) ring thing is an under-appreciated device. I bought it for ring modulation, but I really like it as a harmonizer. I look forward to checking out your other videos.
Thanks! I’m always impressed at how much the RingThing can do. Let me know how your experimenting works out.
Man I wonder what Frank would think of AI music 🤔
I bet he would embrace the A.I. tools that can help isolate audio from mixed recordings.
This is easily the best demo of this pedal and how it operates I have seen. EQD owes you some $ because your video convinced me to purchase one, sir. Great job!
You will not be disappointed. I would find it hard to recommend any other phaser currently in production. It’s great!
At what age did you start learning ? And does age matter when it comes to sitar ? Given that it’s a very difficult instrument to learn.. would you say it is as difficult as learning to play violin ?
I talk about starting sitar in this video: ruclips.net/video/FPk1kSe5IJc/видео.html Sitar is very hard on the fingers. Violin takes a long time to get a nice tone from the bow and string.
Joe's Garage should be right up on the top of his greatest works.
when it was first offerd to me I went like.. what's that?? ugly!! when I fist listend to it I went like... what's that?? I'm in Love!!!
Hai , did you facing any auto focus issue with this lens when using with R series mirrorlesss cameras
Nope! It’s been amazing how well this lens works with the Canon EF to RF adapter. The adapter does make the lens a little longer so if you are using it on a tripod or gimbal you need to take that into consideration.
The mixing of reverb and tremolo in the custom and vintage channels is causing these faults you need to mod it . Have the same amp same problem but don’t want to part with it, need to mod it .once modded you got the best amp ruclips.net/video/6E91tfguNtI/видео.htmlsi=imPTerU3K83PuSLA
Fenders quality is really taking a dive lately. I really wanted to buy a new Princeton, but ended up going a better built brand.
What did you end up buying?
@@JeffStarr I ended up gettting a Friedman Runt-20 for close to the same price as the Princeton and feels like twice the quality. I have to admit I did pick up a used Fender 68 Custom Vibro Champ Reverb for a decent price. I'm taking a chance, but it's a great bedroom/recording amp.
